When Does HVAC Efficiency Create More Waste

Commercial HVAC systems have become dramatically more expensive, and part of the frustration for business owners is the seemingly constant progression of refrigerant standards. We moved from R-22 to R-410A, and now from R-410A to lower-GWP refrigerants such as R-454B and R-32. Each change has an environmental objective, but each also creates another generation of equipment that becomes increasingly difficult and expensive to maintain as refrigerants, parts and industry support migrate to the new standard.

The unintended consequence is that a problem that once might have resulted in replacing a compressor, coil or even just refrigerant can increasingly push an owner toward replacing the entire system. The existing unit may still have years of potential service life, but the economics of maintaining yesterday's technology gradually make replacement the only practical choice.

That raises an environmental question that deserves more attention. When we replace a functioning commercial HVAC system years earlier than we otherwise would have, we're not just changing refrigerants. We're manufacturing another compressor, steel cabinet, copper coils, motors, electronics and controls; transporting a large piece of equipment across the country; bringing a crane to the property; and disposing of or recycling the old system.

Lower-impact refrigerants and more efficient equipment are certainly worthwhile goals. But environmental efficiency should consider the entire lifecycle of the equipment, including the resources required to manufacture and prematurely replace it. If changing standards repeatedly shorten the practical life of expensive mechanical systems, are we certain the overall environmental result is actually better?

Sometimes sustainability may mean installing the newest technology. Other times, it may mean allowing a perfectly serviceable piece of equipment to finish the useful life it was built to provide.
